SPOTLIGHT: NLC Calls for Hometown Economic Stimulus Package
  MayorNovak In an address at the Congress of Cities in Orlando, Fla., NLC President Kathleen Novak, mayor of Northglenn, Colo., called on local officials to urge their members of Congress to partner with local governments on a hometown economic stimulus package. “I call on each of you to take this call for economic stimulus endorsed by the NLC Board of Directors and share it with your members of Congress,” Novak said to 4,000 delegates gathered in Orlando. “Tell them why a hometown stimulus package is important for your community.” Full Story

NLC Elects New Leadership
NLC elected its 2009 Officers and Board of Directors during the Annual Business Meeting at NLC's Congress of Cities in Orlando, Fla. The officers are NLC President Kathleen Novak, mayor, Northglenn, Colo., First Vice President Ronald O. Loveridge, mayor, Riverside, Calif., and Second Vice President James Mitchell Jr., council member, Charlotte, N.C.

Local Officials Focus on Innovative Leadership
Four mayors from throughout the country focused on innovative leadership, in particular in the areas of sustainability and children and families, during a general session Saturday morning at NLC’s Congress of Cities in Orlando, Fla. Charleston, S.C., Mayor Joseph Riley, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Mayors’ Action Challenge for Children and Families to be Unveiled at Congress of Cities
Twenty-six prominent mayors have launched the new Mayors’ Action Challenge for Children and Families to promote city leadership and action on behalf of young people and their families. Based on the premise that strong cities are built on a foundation of strong families, mayors can visit www.mayorsforkids.org to learn more and sign on to the challenge. Full Story

Excellence Awards Honor Municipal Collaborations
Eight city programs that embrace collaboration and innovation will be honored with the 2008 Awards for Municipal Excellence, sponsored by NLC and CH2M HILL. Programs in the following cities are gold winners: Bristol, Va; High Point, N.C.; Henderson, Nev.; and San Jose, Calif. Silver award-winning cities are: South Sioux City, Neb.; West Covina, Calif.; Boise, Idaho; and Denver.
